God works through the disappointments.

The two books of Chronicles are often seen as factual accounts, a snapshot of the rulers of Israel and Judah. It may seem rather dry after reading the books of Samuel and Kings, but a few small details show how things once thought of as a disappointment, can turn into something beautiful. This part of the story deals with details of Samuel's family.

If we read in 1 Samuel 15, the people of Israel reject God as king, part of the reason being they wanted to be "Like all the nations around them" and the other blame is squared at the fact Samuel's sons accepted bribes and were not as honest as their own father. I can only imagine how bitterly disappointed Samuel would have felt.

Fast forward to 1st Chronicles, the grandsons of Samuel became influential men of worship and wisdom in King David's reign. Some of the most moving psalms in the bible are ascribed to them, highlighting their devotion and love of God, proving that He forms and shapes all things to His good will.

Although Samuel did not live to see his grandsons grow up, He would be proud to know how that not only were they critical for the worship in Jerusalem, these sons set the standard for praise and song among the people. It encourages me that even though we may feel our situations might not change, God always works through the heartache.
